Down with Generic Resumes!

One popular strategy for job hunting is to build a nice generic resume (or have some resume agency build it for you), then blast it out to all the employers that you can find. If you think about it for a moment, you’ll realize that this is about the worst strategy you could adopt. Think about it:

  1. the hiring manager has a particular job in mind
  2. that job needs a particular skill set
  3. he or she gets 10-20 resumes per day for the job
  4. they’re all generic resumes that sort of address his job, but not well
  5. why should he choose yours over any of the others?

Instead, try building a semi-custom resume that has the boilerplate stuff like your work experience and education in place, but leaves blank the “career highlights” section. Now, read each job description carefully and ask yourself,

“What problem is the hiring manager trying to solve with this requisition, and how can I make myself look like the perfect person for that job?”

Try to think like the hiring manager and try to imagine the resume that would make him or her sit up and say, “At last! I’ve found a 10-for-10 match!” Now you know what to write in the rest of your resume and in your cover letter. Believe me, this will get your resume to the top of the manager’s stack and make all the other generic resumes fade into obscurity.

So stop thinking that one size fits all when it comes to resumes and become efficient at writing resumes that are custom-tailored to fit the job you’re applying for. Trust me on this, it’ll work much better than blasting out your luke-warm generic resume.

Resume Writing is Not Just a Skill, But an Art

Why do I say this?

Having spent a good last 6 years in the Staffing, Executive Search industry and a solid 20 years prior to that in the Corporate World - I have developed quite a flair for reading resumes. Here are some of the questions that my candidates ask me all the time:

Should I write my resume as per available Templates?

Professionally formatted resumes can make the difference between being employed and remaining unemployed. Resume writers can charge anything between $100 - $500 for a good resume. Templates are available free or better ones from $20 - $50. Remember that the objective of the resume is only to get you an Interview Call.

How many pages should my resume be?

Resumes are like a calling card or a business card. They should be clear, concise and at the same time be able to tickle the curiousity of the hiring manager or the person screening the resumes. Pages should vary depending on the role and experience of the candidate. eg. An Entry level position might warrant a 2 page version whereas a Vice President’s resume might be as long as 4-6 pages.

Should I type my resume or hand write it?

Most resumes that I come across, are neatly typed and sent by emails. Hardly does anyone request hard copies of resumes, unless you are applying for a job with a private mom and pop kind of organization. Gone are the days of the hand written organization.

Do I modify my resume as per the role I am applying for?

Most certainly! You need not lie and mis-represent yourself in anyway. You may highlight certain components of your resume depending on the role requirement and your actual experience.

May I use colored paper for my resume?

I do not recommend it. Maybe in a certain industry like Fashion, Entertainment, etc it may work. Which means that I do not support colored fonts as well, since email is being used predominantly.

Christian Job Search Put Faith IN Your Resume, Not ON It

Faith should show up in your resume, not on it. There’s a huge difference.

Most Christians I’ve worked with have asked me to help them write or revise their resumes. Some have asked me if their faith should be on their resume somewhere.

One could make the case that ministry-related jobs are “Christian jobs” and that a search targeting them is a “Christian job search” and, therefore, your resume ought to mention your faith. I agree, in that context. If you’re not seeking a ministry-related job, though, you faith shouldn’t be listed, hinted at, or referred to.

In those cases, your faith has no place on your resume. But it should be in there. Here’s what I mean.

You resume IS NOT an advertisement for your faith. It IS an advertisement for the effects of your faith.

Your faith shows in

If your references say you did a bad job, or you were the office politics champ, or they suspected you were going to stab them in the back, your faith isn’t in your resume.

If you lie on your resume about your achievements, work history, education, or anything else, your faith isn’t in your resume.

If your resume implies you just showed up and collected a paycheck at your last job, your faith isn’t in your resume.

If your faith isn’t in your resume, putting your faith on your resume doesn’t mean much.

Do you remember the adage that actions speak louder than words (the Bible story about the Good Samaritan describes the same principle)? Putting your faith in your resume means showing that you lived the principles of your faith on the job.

If you’re a Christian job seeker, strive to make your resume reflect your faith instead of advertising it directly. That’s a more principled choice, and it’s even likely to sell better.

Turn Your Lame Resume into a Blockbuster!

How important is a good resume . . . really?

Well, look at it this way. Often it’s the very first contact you have with a prospective employer. It could be the passport to your next job. It’s the gateway to your future. It can ramp up your job search!

And it better be a Blockbuster!

Why? Because you get only one chance at an employer. So you better make it your absolutely best shot!

For example, we know from studies that the average employer spends about 50 seconds scanning it. If you look like an exciting candidate and your capabilities pop off the page you may get a second, more thorough reading . . . and an interview.

But, if it is flat, uninteresting, too long, unfocused, or boring . . . well, you just lost.

You have to be head and shoulders over the competition. Your document has to stand out from the rest of the crowd. If it doesn’t, you’ll get eaten alive by the competition.

So, what’s the answer?

The secret to an extraordinary resume is the amazing marketing techniques perfected in the “bio-action” style.

A “bio-action” approach markets you as a high-value, exclusive product . . . just like a prized sports car or a fine watch.

That means your resume becomes a fabulous advertisement using the very latest promotional techniques:

* Bold, attention-grabbing headlines

* Persuasive summary testimony

* Easy-to-read, visually-attractive text

* Clear, concise promotional language

* Highlighting benefits you bring to the table

Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the ability to step back and take a realistic look at ourselves. Or project ourselves in proven promotional ways.

That’s where professional service comes in . . . one that’s been writing award-winning resumes for thousands worldwide since 1985. You’ll get better quality interviews and land jobs faster by incorporating amazing “bio-action” techniques.

Why Use a Professional Resume Writer

You’ve heard it said a thousand times - “If you want the job done right, do it yourself.” Well, maybe that is true in your area of expertise, but did you get a degree in English? Do you have 20 years of experience in writing marketing and promotional materials? Do you know how to write aggressive, first person material? Can you look objectively at your accomplishments and know how to present them so that the reader says “Wow!”? Probably not.

Most folks try to prepare their own resume - and most are pretty good at putting down their functions and tasks. But most people don’t know how to make their skills jump off the page. That is why a professional writer who is objective about who you are and what you are about should write your resume for you.

A professional resume writer knows all the right buzz words for your industry - or knows where to find them. A professional knows what the latest trends are in resume writing and will incorporate them into your document. A professional takes seminars, reads books, stays up to date on what recruiters and hiring mangers are looking for. You certainly don’t have the time to do this, do you? If you did, you’d be in this business.

So don’t sell yourself short on the most important document you will ever write about yourself. Get the help you deserve.
